Eurojust and the EJTN enable
training for judges and prosecutors

Eurojust and the European Judicial Training Network today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to increase co-operation

On Thursday 7 February, Ms Ilona Lévai, National Member for Hungary, on behalf of the President of the College of Eurojust, Mr José Luís Lopes da Mota, and the Secretary General of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN), Mr Gilles Charbonnier, signed an official Memorandum of Understanding on co-operation between both organisations.

The ceremony took place during the official launch of the EJTN Exchange Programme for 2008, held at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on 7 February.
The purpose of this Memorandum of Understanding is to establish and regulate co-operation between Eurojust and the EJTN in the field of judicial training. It enables secondments to Eurojust of practising judges and prosecutors, as well as trainee judges and prosecutors, from the Member States in order to make them familiar with Eurojust’s tasks, functioning and activities. The parties may also consider undertaking other forms of co-operation relating to judicial training.

The importance of incorporating a European component in national training programmes was highlighted in the Hague Programme on strengthening freedom, security and justice in the European Union.

Mr Lopes da Mota emphasized the added value of the Memorandum of Understanding: “”Judicial training is an essential part of building a common judicial area in Europe. Eurojust stresses the need to enhance mutual knowledge of judicial systems in view of establishing mutual confidence and to disseminate information on EU legal instruments to the judicial authorities in Europe. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the EJTN is an important step. I am looking forward to developing our co-operation with the EJTN in the field of judicial training.””
