Eurojust concludes agreement with Switzerland

Following intensive negotiations between Eurojust and Switzerland, both parties successfully concluded a judicial cooperation agreement, which will be signed during a ceremony to be held in Brussels on 27 November.

Background
The purpose of the Agreement is to enhance the cooperation between Switzerland and Eurojust in the combating of serious forms of international crime. The Agreement governs modalities for closer and increased cooperation, as well as provisions for the exchange of general as well as personal data, respecting Eurojust and Switzerland’s data protection rules.

Switzerland is already closely associated with the justice and law enforcement cooperation of the Member States through the Agreement between the European Union, the European Community and the Swiss Confederation, aiming at combating fraud and any other illegal activity affecting financial interests.

Switzerland may second a Liaison Prosecutor to Eurojust, who shall be regarded as a formal representative of Switzerland to Eurojust.

Eurojust has already concluded judicial cooperation agreements with Europol, Iceland, Norway, the USA and Croatia. All existing cooperation agreements are published on the Eurojust website: http://www.eurojust.europa.eu/official_documents/eju_agreements.htm

A presentation on the agreement will take place on Thursday 27 November 2008 at 13:00, during the signing ceremony, in the press room of the European Council, Justus Lipsius building, Brussels. The ceremony will follow the press conference of the JHA Council in the same venue.

In addition to the French Presidency, Mr Lopes da Mota, President of Eurojust and Ms Gabrijelčič, National Member for Slovenia and Chair of the External Relations Team at Eurojust, will be present.

The press is kindly invited to attend this ceremony and press conference, after which. Mr Lopes da Mota and Ms Gabrijelčič will be available for interviews and more detailed information on this agreement.
