EUROJUST PRESS RELEASE-Mr Aled Williams appointed as new National Member for the United Kingdom

On 18 June 2008, Mr Aled Williams was officially appointed as National Member for the United Kingdom at Eurojust.

The former National Member for the UK, Michael Kennedy, who was also the President of the College, stepped down in November 2007 to accept an appointment as Chief Operating Officer in the Crown Prosecution Service in the United Kingdom. Mr Williams, Deputy National Member, was since then acting National Member.

On 10 April 2008, Mr Williams was appointed as National Member for the UK at Eurojust. In accordance with Article 28(2) of the Eurojust Decision, the appointment was approved by the Secretary General of the European Council, Mr Javier Solana. Mr Phil Hicks will be acting Deputy National Member for the UK until an appointment is made.

Aled Williams joined Eurojust in July 2006. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1984 and then worked as a prosecutor with responsibility for serious cases of homicide, fraud and drug trafficking. In 2002 he was appointed the United Kingdom liaison magistrate to Spain. He worked in that role in the Ministry of Justice in Madrid for four years, dealing with mutual legal assistance, extradition and the introduction of European Arrest Warrant procedures.
